Monica Burn's "His Mistress" Spotlight Tour

His Mistress
By Monica Burns

Blurb:

As a solicitor seeking justice for victims of violence, Tobias Lynsted must maintain control at all times while working in the seedy underworld of London’s East End. The darkness of his world creates a need for the intimacy and release he can only find in the forbidden pleasure of submission. The kind of pleasure where a powerful man has the freedom to let go of his control for a few sweet moments of oblivion. But when a blackmail scheme forces him to marry, the last thing he expects in a wife is a woman who will satisfy the darker side of his nature.

Lady Jane Grisham has no desire to marry, but choosing marriage over a life of destitution is an easy choice to make. Although Jane knows love is for the foolish, Tobias awakens her most wicked and darkest of desires. In the sinful world of domination and submission, Jane uses her blossoming skills to make Tobias surrender not only his body but his secrets. But she quickly discovers that the true test of her strength is trusting Tobias with her heart.

Excerpt #1

“I said kiss me again.” A sultry smile curved her lips. “Would that be such a difficult task to perform?”

Christ almighty, she wanted him to kiss her again. And she was ordering him to do so. She was a seductress demanding she be pleasured. Temptation threatened to overrule every sane thought he possessed. With one simple act, he’d awoken the beast inside him. A dragon that would devour her in one fiery breath. His gaze didn't wander from her face as he struggled to devise a reason not to obey her command. In the back of his mind, a realization hollered out at him, but it subsided into the background as he shook his head as if doing so would clear it.

“I don’t think that would be appropriate,” he choked out. “As you said earlier, a more private setting is called for.”

“Very well,” she murmured as she turned away and walked toward the door.
Relief lashed through him at the realization she’d spared himself and her from the darkness that flowed through his veins the moment she’d uttered her command. Disappointment followed a brief moment later. Bloody hell, he was mad to even consider the possibility of exposing her to his demons.

Tobias took a step forward to follow her then froze in his tracks as Jane locked the door. Disbelief made his muscles draw up taunt as she turned to face him and held up the key for a moment before slowly tucking it down into her bodice.

“There, I think we have all the privacy we could want. Wouldn't you agree?”

There was a mischievous look on her face, but it was the determination in her voice that said he was in trouble. With a shake of his head, Tobias fought back the urge to give into her demands. Suddenly remembering the door into the earl’s study, he allowed himself a smile.

“I think my best course of action is to take my leave through your father’s study.”

He turned away with great effort as his mind flashed images of the dark, luscious valley the door key was nestled against. Even more dangerous than the image was the voice in the back of his head that said she needed to be kissed thoroughly. Kissed hard until she understood she was playing with fire.

Tobias crossed the floor to the door of the earl’s study and turned the knob. Locked. For a moment, he simply stared down at what should have been his salvation before he looked over his shoulder at Jane. Her lovely mouth curved in a slight smile, she rolled her shoulders in a small shrug.

“Father always locks his office when there are guests in the house.” The amusement he heard in her voice made him growl with frustration. In several long strides he was mere inches from her and returning her satisfied expression with a glare.

“You've no idea what you’re asking of me, Jane.”

“Oh, I think I do,” she murmured. “The problem is, you simply don’t want to do as I ask.”

“Ask?” bit out between clenched teeth. “I’d call it more of a command.”

“And would it be so difficult to surrender to my…command?” The softly whispered question was like a velvety iron fist to his stomach. He ignored the question.

“If one plays with fire, one should be prepared to burn, Jane.”

“You say that as if I’m in danger from you.”

“Maybe you are,” Tobias growled as the scent of her invaded his nostrils. God almighty, he wanted to bury his face in her neck just to savor her like one did the fragrance of a fine bottle of wine.

“Then I would like to experience that danger.” She reached out to brush her fingers across his unmarred cheek. “Now kiss me. I’ll not produce the key until you do as I say.”

“Do not forget that I warned you,” Tobias rasped as he tugged her into his arms with a suppressed violence at the way she’d forced his hand.

Not waiting for her reply, he crushed her lips beneath his. Desire pounded its way through his blood as he molded her to his body. Beneath the harshness of his kiss, she froze against him, and he prepared himself for her protest. It didn’t come. Instead, she became soft and pliable in his arms. Deep inside, he shouted the need to stop this madness, but he ignored the warning.

With a sharp nip at the plump skin of her lower lip, he waited for the gasp that would part her lips. A fraction of a second later, his tongue slipped past her teeth to plunder her sweet succulent mouth. Mint and a hint of citrus made her taste cool and tangy. The flavors reminded him of her strength and the occasional mischievous side she kept hidden beneath her serene countenance.

One arm wrapped around her waist, he caressed the side of her throat with his free hand. The pads of his fingers could have been touching silk if he’d not known otherwise. Eager to taste more of her, his mouth left hers to make its way across her cheek and down the side of her neck. A low moan broke free of her lips, while her head fell backward and her breasts press deeper into his chest. Immediately, his hand slid downward to caress the peach-toned swells of her breasts framed by her gown’s bodice. She was lovely, and she didn't deserve his darkness touching her in any form.

Desperately, he shoved aside the desire she’d aroused in him and prepared himself to secure the room’s key then leave her before he did something he regretted. In an adroit move, he plucked the key from between her breasts. At her small cry of surprise, he swung his gaze up to her face. Cheeks flushed with warm color, she had the look of woman ready for the intimate touch of her lover.

Subtle and feminine, her scent filled his nostrils with a hint of flowers in a summer meadow. The essence of her sank its way into him in a manner that sent alarm bells ringing in his head. Her fresh, feminine fragrance was a direct contrast to the shadows that filled his soul. Eyes closed, Tobias struggled to regain his self-control. His ability to do so was hindered by the sound of her ragged breathing, the softness of her pressing into his hard muscles, and the memory of her sweetly curved breasts.

Erotic images of suckling her nipples while cupping the lush curve of her filled his head. The thought pounded against the barrier he’d created between sanity and desire. With a violent crash, the darkness broke through his restraint and enveloped him like a raging river of fire.

The key slipped from his fingers to hit the carpet beneath their feet with a barely perceptible thud as he bent his head and probed the edge of the cleft between her breasts with his mouth. The quiet mewl of pleasure drifting out of her throat only increased the level of his desire as he allowed his tongue to imitate a more intimate act.

Excerpt #2

Free for the moment to watch her without the possibility of penalty, Tobias studied her as one might a work of art. His gaze swept downward to the curve of her waist and where her skirt billowed outward. Her dark hair brushed against her back like brown silk. The lust she’d drawn from his body only a moment ago took hold of him once more as he contemplated the temptation hidden beneath her wide skirts. In his mind’s eye, he knew exactly how he would pleasure her.

He’d make her cry out just like he had, and then he’d do it again until they were both satiated. As he saw her about to turn toward her, he quickly dropped his head knowing by looking at her he was defying her orders. He wanted to please her, not make her unhappy.

“My Lady,” he rasped. “I am grateful for your attention to my needs.”

“It gave me a great deal of pleasure to take care of you, Tobias.” she said softly as she returned to his side. “And despite that small tear, you even managed to avoid breaking your restraints. It demonstrates the extent of your self-control.”

There was an undefinable emotion in her voice that made him think she regretted not allowing him to bed her. Once more images of him filling her with his cock flooded his head. Almost immediately, he began to hardened. It would be only a minute or two before he’d be able to satisfy her as she’d satisfied him.

“Allow me to satisfy you as well, my Lady,” he said quiet confidence.

She didn't respond to his request. Instead she turned away. Although his gaze remained downcast, he watched her bend down to pick up her jacket. Frustration blistered its way through him as he watched the burgundy waistcoat cover her beautiful breasts. One hand on her waist and the other at her throat, Tobias knew she was contemplating his offer. Even though he couldn't see her face, he was certain she was frowning as she considered his words. The deep breath she drew in made his heart sink.

“I don’t think that’s possible.” Doubt riddled her words as she turned to face him. Long, beautiful fingers made short work of buttoning her jacket, and he sensed her uncertainty. It merely strengthened his desire to convince her to let him pleasure her.

“It is possible, my Lady.” Tobias’s body tightened with desire, his cock already halfway to becoming fully erect again. “Let me worship your body with my hands and mouth. Let me satisfy you as no other man has done before.”

“A bold promise.” There was a hint of breathlessness in her voice, but laughter as well. Tobias chafed at her amusement.

“You've asked me not to lie to you, my Lady. I am not lying when I say that I know how to pleasure you.” His harsh response caused silence to stretch between them for a long moment.

“I want more than the promise of pleasure, Tobias,” she said in a voice that had lost all trace of amusement. “I want complete submission.”
An icy finger scraped down Tobias’s spine, and the ground shifted beneath his feet as he considered her words. In the past, he’d heard similar words from the Ladies he’d sought his release with. But Mystère’s words held a far deeper meaning than any Lady he’d ever submitted to before. Fear twisted and knotted his gut until he no longer felt the pain in his arms.

She was asking for a part of him he’d never shared with anyone, and he had no intention of doing so now. When he didn't answer, Mystère closed the distance between them. Her touch gentle, she undid his lace straps then gently pulled his arms downward until his bound hands hung loosely in front of him. The fingers that had gripped him moments ago made short work of the silk tie wrapped around his wrists.

“You may remove the restraints from your legs and dress, Tobias,” she said quietly as she turned away.

It was a signal their play had ended for the evening.

Excerpt

The second I saw the man Trevor was salivating over step onto the curb and adjust his mirrored shades, it triggered a memory. As did his spectacular body beneath his tight, long-sleeved shirt—nary an inch of skin showing. Not to mention his chiseled face that had a light dusting of whiskers around the chin—a face I’d thought I’d never see again. Only now, fully dressed, he gave off more of a paramilitary vibe. Maybe I’d forgotten the scary aspects about him, but his looks still lingered in my mind all these months later.

“I think I know him,” I said under my breath.

Four months ago, I gave Lexi a ride home. Reno Cole, Austin’s brother, was outside throwing horseshoes in the yard without a shirt on. A thin sheen of sweat covered his broad torso, which was the only thing I noticed since he was wearing sunglasses and a baseball hat. I had a “stupid” attack and almost tripped in front of him. I’d never felt more intimidated by a man’s presence in my life. I felt cowardly and my mouth refused to work, and when it finally did, I mentioned something about the heat like I was a walking weathergirl. Reno’s fit body spanned just over six feet, but his expression was tight and menacing. I shamelessly fled the scene, but the tire on my car wedged into a pothole. He stalked over as if he might rip my car door off and pummel me for messing up their driveway.

But he didn't. He pushed the car free and I never saw him again.

Fingers snapped in front of my face and Trevor gave me a killer smile. “Nice to see you still have a pulse. I was beginning to think your libido took a permanent vacation."

About the Author

This is the segment where you learn a little more about who I am, so here's what I can tell you:  I drink copious amounts of vitamin water placed precariously close to my laptop while writing. These are two healthy habits I have no intention of breaking. I'm a transplant living in the south, but I was born in the 70's to a military dad who moved us around the world.

When I'm not writing (which is all the time), I'm hunting down Indie music, watching movies, reading, eating Tex-Mex, discovering new ways to humiliate myself bowling, and burning up my laptop battery on the Internet. I have a relaxed, easy-going personality and don't like drama. I live with a cat who thinks she is a dog, or a goat (she eats plastic, so I'm not sure which).

Throughout my life, I've had insomnia. Counting sheep never worked and eventually I would imagine those sheep were the sole source of food after an apocalyptic battle where only thousands survived. I made up stories in a futile attempt to bore myself to sleep. The problem was, I got so wrapped up in my "head stories" that I would continue them through the following nights, changing it up each time to make it more exciting. Eventually, I started writing my ideas down - creating short stories, and then I discovered my love for poetry.

It's almost embarrassing how many spiral notebooks and stacks of paper I have of poetry and lyrics.

Another passion: digital art. I design all my book covers, marketing, and series art. I'm a very visual person and pursued photography as an avid hobby for many years.

I am not a YA author (I feel like I have to state this only because I've had a few people ask), but I think it's wonderful there are so many books available to teens in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal.

I am finally doing what I have always wanted to do: giving my characters a pulse through writing full time. I focus on adult urban fantasy romance, but I don't like labels and I enjoy blending genres to break out of the confines of predictability.

But it's what I love to do.

 “Lindsey, what’s wrong?”
“Nothing, sir. I’m doing well.”
“Come talk to me.” His grandfather turned and walked into the living room.
Did he want to talk? He’d have to be careful, but yes. Pop-Pop was a smart man. He walked down the stairs and into the large, comfortable room. His grandfather sat on a love seat at one end of the room, so he took the identical seat across from him. He leaned back and crossed his legs. Look relaxed.
Pop-Pop sat forward. “Romantic troubles?”
Wow. The old man had a way of diving to the truth. “Not exactly.”
“I heard you had a date with the Westerberg son. Your mother’s doing, I believe.” The old man could have been talking about a date with a girl, he was so comfortable with it.
“Yes, sir.”
“Did you like him?”
“Well enough.”
“Ah, so he’s not the issue.”
Lindsey grinned. His grandfather was enjoying the guessing game.
“So if it’s not exactly romantic troubles, what exactly is it?”
“I guess you could call it unrequited romantic interest.”
He rubbed his hands together. “Now this is interesting. I've seen you with many men over the years since you returned from school, but none of them lasted more than a few dates, and none of them ever sparked what I would call romantic interest. How odd that you should affix your affection on one who doesn't care about you. Have you considered it might be a form of self-protection? Only wanting the ones you can’t have has a way of keeping you single.”
Lindsey grinned. “I guess that’s possible sometimes, but not in this case. He’s just highly inappropriate. A tough cop I met while helping Dave with the kidnapping issue. Dave asked if I would take him to the polo match to give him a chance to investigate among people we know without being too obvious. So I did it.” Lindsey shrugged.
“And got caught in your own trap.”
He smiled, but it hurt around the edges. “Yes, I guess. I found him attractive from the start but assumed he was straight, so it was just a harmless flirtation. After the match, I found out he’s gay, so that made the vast expanse between us more real.”
Pop-Pop frowned. “It’s not like you to discriminate based on class.”
“Nothing like that, sir. He’s the one discriminating, I’m sure. I’m simply not at all his type. A bit too lavender silk for his black leather, shall we say.”
His grandfather steepled his fingers and stared over them. “You’re not just one thing, Lindsey. I've know many men in my life and you’re one of the very best. Smart, decisive, action-oriented, kind, and basically good. Unlike your father, I might add. You need a man who sees that. But you've got good judgment, so if you think this cop is romance-worthy, then my bet is there’s something there worth pursuing. Ride him down, son!” He laughed that big robust sound that had comforted Lindsey since the day he was born.

EXCERPT

The dark creature walked over to me, unusually close, the heat from his skin leaping onto mine. He held up his open palm. As if entranced, I placed my hand upon his and our fingers laced together. Suddenly the darkness of his eyes was illuminated with swirls of hypnotic colors circling each other in the very middle where his pupils should be.
I knew I shouldn't be here, shouldn't be touching this sinful creature, but I couldn't stop. His touch was hot with a passion I had never known before, yet so familiar. I was caught in a trap that I never wanted to get out of.

His other hand dug into my hair and jerked my head back, his breath hot on my neck, his eyes peering into mine.

“How many more, ma’am?” a fireman shouted out above the sirens.

The female just stood there in front of the smoldering shelter before her, both hands covering her face, ashen-filled tears falling from the edge of her jaw.

“Ma’am!” the fireman hollered out. “Who else are you missing?”

The wind changed directions. I looked up to see another angel passing by, carrying the breeze along with her. She raised her hand ever so slightly to wave. I nodded at her.
The fireman covered his nostrils with the inside of his arm as the wind carried the sultry smoke toward him.

The female seemed unaffected by the smoke. She just kept staring at that front door, her apprehension more of a focus now as she waited. “Two,” she finally replied.

“Did she say two?” another guy asked.

“Two?” he asked her again to confirm.

Never looking his way, she nodded. “My husband, he went back in for our oldest son.”

“Who are you?” I whispered, my chest heaving up and down from his firm grasp on my hair. My anger flared. I should kill him for putting his hands on me like that, but it felt so good.

He narrowed his eyes at me for a moment before answering, “Draco.”

Draco.

He released me as I stood up straight, facing him. I knew who this strange creature was. I had heard about him on my travels. He was a solider of the dark, with strength witnesses marveled at. Most of the soldiers of the dark were cowards who slithered here and there with little, if any, common sense about their purpose or duty at hand. It was said that this Draco’s loyalty surpassed all others. But there was one other tidbit I had heard that was even more unusual. Those who worked with him, who were on the same side, seemed to like him. It was a concept unheard of for the dark side. Everyone was your enemy and everyone hated each other.

“And you are?” he asked.

If I said my name, he’d know who I was as well, and he’d run away. My intrigue was far too deep to have him disappear just yet.

“It doesn't matter, does it?” I said.

He smirked, a dimple forming in the side of his cheek.

Excerpt

“I know what I want.” Her voice was soft. Seductive.
            Drake stopped.
“I-I have to ask, though…is that the way it works?”
            His back teeth clenched.
“The ladies you take upstairs to your private room…they all ask?”
Those women knew the rules going in. Sex. Hot. Fast. Hard. No promises. No ties.
Ties were the last thing he wanted.
He turned back to look at her.  “You came to this place looking for me.”
            She backed up a bit.
He let his lips curl and knew his smile wasn't going to be reassuring. “Be very careful. You don’t want to play with me.”
He expected her to scurry away then.
But her chin notched into the air. “Maybe I do,” she said and her voice made his cock jerk. Sex and sin—that was what she sounded like just then.
