Deep Soul
(Dark Souls #2)”
By Anne Hope

Blurb:
"Save her life or save mankind. His choice could cost him his soul. "

For nearly two centuries, Marcus has been the Watchers most faithful soldier. Sworn to protect humanity, driven by an unrelenting compulsion to atone for past sins, he has rarely found a compelling reason to question his mission, let alone defy his leader.

His partner, Regan, is his exact opposite, an enigma he longs to solve. A free spirit and reckless to a fault, Regan acts first and thinks later. Her smart mouth and tender heart have fascinated Marcus for decades, but the Watchers strict vow of celibacy has forced him to ignore the sizzling attraction between them. Until now.

When Regan goes rogue to protect a very special little boy, Marcus is forced to make an impossible choice commit an act of treason or watch the woman he secretly loves die.

Hunted by enemies and allies alike, Regan and Marcus run for their lives, fighting to thwart an age-old prophecy and guard a boy whose destiny may very well be to destroy the world or save it.

Warning: Contains violent battle scenes, angels with twisted agendas, nail-biting suspense, intense emotion, burning-hot sexual tension, and a sexy, stubborn hero who would rather face death than admit what s in his heart.

Simone sucked in a surprised breath and froze.
Mitch’s lips pressed against hers, soft, firm, cool like the air in the small lookout, but warming from a heat that was flaring to life between them. Like a fire sparking against black embers and slowly turning to a full-blown blaze.
He groaned, the sound echoing through his chest and into hers, sending fingers of awareness tingling through her core. He eased the pressure on her mouth, tilted his head, and kissed her again. Her pulse sped up. Electricity raced all along her skin. Panic—or maybe it was excitement, she couldn’t tell which—clouded her mind, making it hard to think, to act, to know what to do.
The hand at her jaw slid up into her hair, and his fingers spread, cupping the back of her head, tugging her even closer. She grabbed a fistful of his flannel shirt—to push him away or pull him closer, she wasn’t sure which—but right now she was glad he’d taken off that heavy coat, that she didn’t have to fumble with layers of fabric, that he wasn’t giving her time to think.
“Give in to me, Simone,” he mumbled against her lips. “You know you want to.”
Oh, but she did. It was why she’d gone to see him that night at his house. Why she’d come all the way to Tahoe with him. Why she’d agreed to this silly hike that now didn’t seem so foolish anymore. But nothing had changed. If anything, his life was in more danger because of her, and if she gave in, if she took everything he was offering without thinking of the consequences and something bad happened to him, she’d never be able to forgive herself.
She let go of his shirt and pressed her palm against his chest. This time to push him away. Definitely to push him away. She eased back enough to suck in air. “Mitch. This isn’t a good idea.”

“Your good ideas haven’t exactly panned out, sweetheart. Time to try someone else’s.”

“Do you have any regrets, Vivienne?” he asked without turning, surprising the hell out of me. I expected billowing rage from my prodding. Instead, he gave me reflection.

“Besides not killing you before escaping?”

“You would have tried, мое сокровище…”

“I would have succeeded,” I replied, lifting my own glass of wine, pulling a mouthful of the dark red liquid.

“Confidence is one thing you don’t lack,” Aedan replied, turning to give me a smile. “And that is something your mother gave to you.”

“My mother gave me a lot of things--life, happiness, strength, a trunk full of lies. She also gave me a life of being tied to a ruthless prick; one that I am unfortunately being forced to be civil to. But I swear to the Angels, if you continue to speak of her…”

“Your name suits you, you know. She picked perfectly, Vivienne.”

Although he irritated me, pushed me to near fury at almost every turn, when Aedan spoke simple words such as my name or even my mother’s, it sounded like verbal art. They rolled off of his tongue with a graceful beauty that, if I hadn't completely loathed him, would be relaxing to listen to all day. But his smooth voice and relaxing accent couldn't wash away the fact that he was a liar, manipulator, and most importantly a murderer.

“Hope, Faith, Serenity, and Joy sure as fuck wouldn't have worked. I’m all out of all those things, they were leached from my bones at birth,” I replied, my words ending on a sigh.

It was Aedan’s turn to laugh--a real, full laugh. His face lit up, creases forming around his eyes as it continued, softening his edges a little further.

“You are alive, Vivienne. That’s what your name means, you know--alive? You are so full of life. And you do not give anything the right to take it from you. I admire that about you,” he said, coming closer, pulling out the chair next to me, sitting down, staring across the room. “One of the many things.”

About the Author

I was never one of those people who knew they wanted to be an author at the age of six. I didn't have imaginary friends. I didn’t write stories in my journal or entertain my relatives by firelight after Thanksgiving dinner. For the most part, I was just a normal, everyday kid. I liked to read, but I wasn't exceptional at it. And when my teachers complimented me on my writing abilities, I brushed them off. I did, however, always have a penchant for the unique and absurd. And as my mother told me all throughout my childhood, I should have been an actress—I was a drama queen before my time.

Years ago, my husband bought me Scarlett: The Sequel to Gone With The Wind. If you ever saw the book, you know it’s a long one. I sat and read that thing from cover to cover, and dreamed of one day being a writer. But I didn't actually try my hand at writing until years later when I quit my teaching job to stay home with my kids. And my husband? After that week of reading where I neglected him and everything else until I finished Scarlett, he vowed never to buy me another book again. Little did he know I’d one day end up sitting at a keyboard all day drafting my own stories.

“We can’t do anything else out here,” she said. “Not tonight.”
She was being so careful with him. Too careful.
“Don’t,” he bit out as he stalked toward her. The others weren't close enough to overhear, so he could lower his guard and let some of his fury out.
Cadence shook her head. “Don’t what?”
He wanted to wrap his hands around her. To pull her close.
No, I just want to touch her. To feel her.
“Don’t handle me with your damn kid gloves, Cadence.” The words were snapped. “I’m not some victim you have to coddle.”
He’d rolled up the sleeves of his dress shirt—like that had done much good. He was covered with grime and sweat and plenty of insect bites.
I fucking hate summers in the South.
Insects were chirping all around them, and he’d had to dodge snakes in the bushes for most of the evening.
“I never thought you were a victim.” Cadence turned from him and headed for the car.
She knew he’d follow her. Wasn't he always trailing after her?
Wasn't he the one who always kept the need in check? The desire he damn well knew they both felt.
After today—after this hell—why couldn’t they turn to each other for some comfort and release? Let that desire burst free?
Replace death with pleasure.

Melina raced down the hall toward the exit, the staccato tapping of her high heels echoing around her. She slammed into the bar and the door flew open. One of her shoes slipped off just inside the door.

The blizzard had arrived earlier than expected and the cold fury of the storm jerked her out the door.

She barely had time to kick off the other shoe before the wind slammed her into the deepening snow. Pushing herself upright, she realized her only chance to escape her pursuer was to get to her car. The car would protect her. She would be safe. But then reality slammed her down once again.

“My car! My beautiful car!” Her horrified screams were muffled by the wind as the storm raged around her. Someone had slashed the tires and shattered the windshield of the Viper.

“He must have done this. Damn him!” Melina felt the bile rise in the back of her throat. She was stranded with a deranged student chasing her.

In that moment of terror and despair she thought of Grant. “I’ve got to reach Grant. He will help me. Grant will protect me!”

A quick glance over her shoulder eased her panic because she didn’t see her pursuer. Did he leave? But that fleeting bit of hope was crushed when she saw a dark pickup truck bearing down on her. Melina ran behind a nearby dumpster. The truck skidded and slammed into the dumpster.
Hoping that the truck was stuck or damaged enough to give her a head start, Melina crawled away from her hiding place, her knees aching and her clothes soaked. Just as she reached the tall Photinia shrubs bordering the parking lot the truck’s engine revved and it backed up.

Snow swirled around Melina’s trembling body as she climbed to her feet and saw the truck headed her way once again. Diving behind the bushes, she squeezed her eyes shut and heard the squealing tires. She held her breath, expecting to be hit. But nothing happened.

Her eyes flew open. Melina squinted trying to see what made him swerve away. Then she noticed that the bush she hid behind was planted in front of a light pole. No wonder he swerved.

A sob caught in her throat as the truck turned and headed away from the parking lot. Was he giving up? She prayed that was the case.

Terrified and half-blinded by her tears and the blowing snow, Melina ran in what she hoped was the direction of Campus Corner, a group of shops near the Addington campus. Her hands and feet were cold and raw from crawling and running on the rocks and debris hidden under the snow but she had to keep moving.

Suddenly the truck came after her from behind a building she just passed. Melina tried to avoid him by running a zigzag pattern, but he swerved back and forth with surprising ease, mirroring her movements.

Cold, wet and terrified beyond reason, Melina wondered how much longer she could last before the cold steel of the truck’s bumper hit her.

Then, as if tiring of his game of cat and mouse, he gunned the engine and raced toward her. Melina’s only hope was to reach the snow bank to her right. She broad jumped for the bank with power and agility born of desperation and sank into the deep snow gasping for breath.

The truck skidded but continued moving toward the snow bank where she had taken refuge. Expecting to feel the impact of the truck at any second, Melina felt herself scream; the sound lost in the howling wind.

The ground shook as the truck crashed into the trunk of an enormous live oak tree.
Clawing frantically to free herself from the deep snow, Melina shouted for help, but the storm muffled her voice, and her cries for help went unanswered.

Then the door of the truck creaked.

Her heart was pounding so hard that her chest hurt as she searched for a store that might still be open. Then, out of the corner of her eye a dim light caught her attention. “A grocery store.”
The truck door slammed sending Melina over the edge. Screaming hysterically, she scrambled toward the safety of the store. Slipping and sliding, she pushed the door open and stumbled inside.

An elderly gentleman behind the counter looked up in surprise from the paper he was reading.
“Please, help me,” she gasped, clutching her chest.

He hurried around the counter. “What’s the matter, little lady? Are you hurt?”
Gripping his arm, Melina struggled to speak through chattering teeth.

“S . . . someone tried to . . . run me down . . . with his truck. I need a phone.”
